WaMu Theater Seattle, Washington
In 2006, Future Cities was commissioned by the Seattle SeaHawks and AEG to develop a portable 5,000 seat theatre venue in Seattle which could transform exhibition space at Qwest Field into a fully functioning theaterthen revert to its original exhibition format. The solution was to create a series of portable components that included concession operations, seating, staging, rigging, walls of curtains and appropriate sound control panels. Like the touring shows themselves who crated and transported their necessary equipment and assembled for each performance, the entire theatre was conceived of in this manner. Utilizing the existing shell of the convention center as the weather enclosure, and the underutilized restrooms and service areas , the cost of construction was 1/10th of comparably sized venues elsewhere.
The theater was conceived and designed to accommodate a wide range of stage productions, including pop, rock, country, comedy, variety, and family shows. The WaMu Theater's unique flexibility of component parts and versatility also accommodates corporate events, seminars, television productions, special events, and other hospitality-related functions in record changeover times.
