Douglas Ranch

Maricopa County is the one of fastest growing counties in the United States and has experienced population increases of 100,000 each year for the past 7 years. As a result, government sanctioned sprawl has created serious issues of sustainability in the region. In 2007, El Dorado Holdings commissioned Future Cities to conduct a planning study for a 34,000-acre planned city outside of Phoenix that would eventually serve a resident population of 250,000. Future Cities, working with Arup Associates produced a planning study that demonstrated the basis for urban planning as a model for sustainable practices as the new communities develop over time.

The study focused on process and principles and showcased precedent case studies, both domestically and internationally, scale comparisons, urban core configurations, and regional alternative energy, water, waste systems and transportation systems that allowed a series of connected cores to be developed over the course of time.
