Maricopa County is the one of fastest growing counties in the United States and has experienced population increases of 100,000 each year for the past 7 years. As a result, government sanctioned sprawl has created serious issues of sustainability in the region. In 2007, El Dorado Holdings commissioned Future Cities to conduct a planning study for a 34,000-acre planned city outside of Phoenix that would eventually serve a resident population of 250,000. Future Cities, working with Arup Associates produced a planning study that demonstrated the basis for urban planning as a model for sustainable practices as the new communities develop over time.
