Edwin W Pauley Pavilion UCLA, Los Angeles, California

In October, 2006, Future Cities was commissioned to conduct an ‘Issue and Opportunities’ workshop to advance concepts for a next generation Pauley Pavilion—UCLA’s iconic indoor arena. The process was designed to be an immersive and interactive brainstorming technique that had been employed by other arena development programs (America West Arena in 2000, and Charlotte in 2002) to quickly evaluate unrealized opportunities and uncover best approaches to create beneficial change.

The results led to a next phase concept analysis that demonstrated the desirability of renovation over a complete rebuild and focused on new fan amenities, food and beverage venues, and more diverse seating options that supported new and previously unavailable revenue. These included lounges, club boxes and adjoining clubs while providing even closer proximity seating for students and traditional ticket-holders.
